Frozen margarita machines
Frozen
margarita machines are a relatively new invention. Of course, it only
makes sense, since the margarita itself only came into existence in
the first half of the 19th century. So, when was the magical machine
that makes margaritas invented? After much research, the Smithsonian
National Museum of American History pinpointed the first frozen margarita
machine to be that of Dallas restaurateur Mariano Martinez, invented
on May 11, 1971.
He never patented his idea, and as a result, there were many copycats.
Nonetheless, his modified soft-serve ice cream machine was the first.
Why did he make it? He knew that the margarita would be a popular drink,
but his bartenders could not keep up with his customers’ demands
for it. So, he made a machine that could keep up with the demand while
ensuring that each drink was of the same high quality.
Of course, to create the perfect margarita in a machine rather than
a blender, Martinez had to go through some trial and error. After all,
while a blender uses ice, a machine does not – it freezes the
liquid put into it. In the end, the key to the frozen margarita machine
was sugar.
